The Fire Prevention Bureau is the inspection, public education, and code enforcement division of the fire department. The bureau assists with our mission of life safety through code enforcement and inspections during the new business development process and general fire inspections. Fire Prevention education is the first step in the Fire Department’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of our residents and visitors to our community.
Each year the Okolona Fire Department visits schools, businesses, and daycares to conduct fire drills. We also develop educational programs to promote fire safety in the home and work place. Fire prevention inspections of area businesses are conducted not only to check for fire safety violations, but to familiarize firefighting personnel with the floor plan and contents of the buildings. The Okolona Fire Department conducts around 3,000 inspections every year which are done on an annual basis.
Buildings under construction will commonly encounter fire personnel onsite. This can be a benefit from routine inspections made to ensure that they adhere to the building codes. The codes are established to protect the occupants from hazards such as fire. The firefighters are also familiarized with the type of building construction during the construction phase of a project. This assists the firefighters in determining life hazards and tactics if they were to respond to an incident at the site.
Okolona Fire Department, in conjunction with the other Jefferson County Fire Departments, participates in a smoke detector give-away program. Project Firewatch, as the program is called, enables residents who cannot afford to purchase a smoke detector to receive one. In some cases, the Fire Department will assist in installation.
