The Okolona Fire Department has been awarded a $2,090,262.00 million Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) SAFER Grant program is specially designed to bolster the capabilities of local fire departments, equipping them with the necessary resources to respond effectively to emergencies. Okolona Fire Protection District’s successful grant application is a testament to the departments commitment to providing exemplary emergency services to our community.
The grant funding will support the hiring of 6 new firefighter positions for the next three years. SAFER, or the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response Grant, helps provide funding to departments across the U.S. to increase or maintain the number of "frontline" firefighters in their community. We plan to increase staffing to comply with the National Fire Protection Association 1710's recommended staffing requirements by having 16 firefighters assigned to a 24-hour shift. Okolona Fire Department is the only department in the state of Kentucky to receive SAFER Grant Funding for Hiring in 2024. |
